... I enjoy working around great superintendents and other managers, working together to benefit the entire company. I have worked with a smaller family-owned company and now with a larger company and one of the biggest differences is the room to grow in my career here at Blythe. Tell us a little about your professional experience including your education?
Marsh: I graduated from Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, NC, with a degree in Construction Management. I worked for a few years with another construction firm. In 2002, I sent in my resume to Blythe because I knew of the company and I felt I would have more opportunities here.
What was your first job at Blythe?
I was hired by the estimating department by Chief Estimator Jim McBryde. I worked with Jim for a little while, but I really wanted to get experience out in the field as a construction engineer. Jim was very helpful and set me up with then Project Manger Brian Webb. (Webb is now a Construction Manager.) Brian hired me as Construction Engineer for the I-85 widening design/build project and has since been a great mentor and coach. He has a vast knowledge of construction management.
In January of this year you were promoted to Project Manger. What has been your biggest challenge in this new position?
One of the biggest challenges of my job is working more with the owner, negotiating change orders, determining the sequence of work on each project and evaluating the impact of scope changes.
What advice do you have for new engineers?
The biggest piece of advice I can give new engineers is to listen to the superintendents and foremen out doing to work. Also, get out on the projects and see how things are done. One of the biggest advantages I had was that I actually was a foreman for two seasons and during that time I gained a lot of hands-on experience, which has helped me in my roll as an estimator, engineer, and now as a manager.
With so much turnover in this industry, especially among engineers, what has made you stay at Blythe Construction?
I’ve elected to stay with Blythe because of the people I work with. I enjoy working around great superintendents and other managers, working together to benefit the entire company. I have worked with a smaller family-owned company and now with a larger company and one of the biggest differences is the room to grow in my career here at Blythe. I have grown in my career and foresee the opportunity to continue to advance within the company.
